David is joining Claremont McKenna College as Professor of Psychology, Academic Director of the Kravis Leadership Institute, Steven L. Eggert ‘82 P’15 Professor of Leadership and George R. Roberts Fellow. Previously he was Professor of Organisational Behaviour and Woodside Chair in Leadership and Management at The University of Western Australia Business School.

David is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Association for Psychological Science, International Association of Applied Psychology, and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and has core research interests in the areas of leadership, identity, and leadership development. In 2010 he was awarded the Walter F. Ulmer Research Award from the Center for Creative Leadership (USA) for outstanding, career-long contributions to applied leadership research.

Jay Conger is the Henry Kravis Chaired Professor of Leadership and Institute Chair of the Kravis Leadership Institute at Claremont McKenna College in California. He is one of the world’s experts on leadership. You will see him quoted in the Wall Street Journal and other business periodicals analyzing people and trends in the executive suite and in the boardroom. In recognition of his extensive work with companies, Business Week named him the best business school professor to teach leadership and one of the top five management education teachers worldwide. He has published over one hundred articles and 14 books on the topics of leadership development, corporate boards, influence and communications strategies for leaders, executive leadership, and organizational change.

Ronald E. Riggio, Ph.D. is the Henry R. Kravis Professor of Leadership and Organizational Psychology at Claremont McKenna College. Dr. Riggio’s research interests center on charismatic and transformational leadership, nonverbal and verbal communication skills, and the development of leadership potential across the lifespan. He has published nearly two-dozen authored or edited books and more than 150 articles and book chapters. He has also served as a consultant to dozens of organizations, large and small, across the business, education, and non-profit sectors. He is the co-editor, along with Georgia Sorenson, of the Routledge/Taylor & Francis book series: Leadership: Research and Practice.

Pamela Brooks Gann has served as the President of Claremont McKenna College (1999-2013) and the Dean of the Duke University School of Law (1988-1999). She has taught at Duke University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Virginia; in summer programs at Washington University, Saint Louis, and the University of Colorado; and in international programs at the Salzburg Seminar and in China, Paris, and Vietnam. Her publications largely pertain to taxation and public finance and international trade and investments. Her current interests include: leadership studies, law and economics of higher education, law and public policy of the non-profit sector, and international economic relations. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Council on Foreign Relations and International Education of Students (IES Abroad).

Nicholas O. Warner, Ph.D.

Nicholas Warner was educated at Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley, where he received his Ph.D. in English. After teaching at Oberlin College, he came to Claremont McKenna, where he is currently Professor of Literature. His publications include Spirits of America: Intoxication in 19th Century American Literature (a Choice Outstanding Academic Book) and articles on leadership in literature and film, which is also the topic of several of his courses at CMC. He has received the Glen R. Huntoon Award for Superior Teaching five times, and the G. David Huntoon Senior Teaching Award twice.

Sherylle J. Tan, Ph.D. is the Director of Internships and KLI Research at the Kravis Leadership Institute. In addition, Dr. Tan is currently the 2016 Chair of the Executive Leadership Team for the International Leadership Association Women and Leadership Affinity Group. At KLI, Dr. Tan oversees the KLI Internship program, longitudinal research on undergraduate leadership education, and program evaluations of all KLI leadership and changemaking programs. Much of Dr. Tan’s research focuses on applying developmental theory and methods to understanding the issues of leadership development, women and leadership, work and family, and child development. Most recently, Dr. Tan co-edited with Ron Riggio, Leader Interpersonal and Influence Skills: The Soft Skills of Leadership (2014).

Scott Sherman Ph.D.

Scott Sherman is an expert on the most effective ways that people succeed in their attempts to make an impact – whether working for public health, the environment, or economic prosperity. He is currently writing a book summarizing his research, How We Win: The Science of Making the World a Better Place. Over the last decade, Sherman has taught courses on social entrepreneurship and social innovation at numerous universities, including Yale, Princeton, and Penn. In 2005, Sherman co-founded an award-winning social enterprise, the Transformative Action Institute (TAI). The mission of TAI is to train the next generation of social entrepreneurs, innovators, and change makers for the 21st century.That year, he won the international Echoing Green competition, which recognized him as one of the world’s “best emerging social entrepreneurs.” Sherman has also won awards from Ashoka U for excellence and innovation in teaching social entrepreneurship. In 2016, his social enterprise was part of the inaugural class inducated into Ashoka U’s Hall of Fame. His curricula and workshops have been used at more than 50 campuses across the United States from Harvard and Penn to Stanford and UCLA. His programs have also been used in dozens of nations around the world from Europe to Latin America, and from Africa to Asia. Sherman earned his undergraduate and law degrees from U.C. Berkeley, as well as his Ph.D. in environmental studies from the University of Michigan.

Gemma Bulos

Gemma Bulos is a multi award-winning serial social entrepreneur (SocEnt) having launched three organizations in three continents prior to joining the KLI staff. As the Founding Director of the Global Women’s Water Initiative, she trains grassroots women in Sub-Saharan Africa to become water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) technicians, trainers and social entrepreneurs. GWWI was shortlisted for the Humanitarian Water and Food Award and Gemma was named one of the Top 10 Water Solutions Trailblazers in the world by Reuters Foundation. Prior to stepping in to lead GWWI, Gemma co-founded A Single Drop for Safe Water, developing income-generating community-led water service organizations in disaster prone regions of the Philippines. For this innovation, Gemma received international accolades including Echoing Green as one of the Best Emerging SocEnts in the World; Best SocEnt in the Philippines by Ernst Young; Most Influential Thought Leader and Innovative Filipina in the United States by Filipina Women’s Network; and Best SocEnt in Asia by the Schwab Foundation with a special recognition at the World Economic Forum. Her programs also won accolades including the Silicon Valley Tech Museum Tech Award sponsored by Applied Materials and Warriors of the UN Millennium Goals sponsored by Kodak Philippines. Gemma was invited to bring her knowledge and expertise as a Social Entrepreneur en Residence (SEERS) Fellow at Stanford University where she helped launch a social innovation curriculum where students had opportunities to engage and work alongside award-winning SocEnts through service-learning seminar courses, internships and fellowships abroad.

With 17 years of facilitation experience for college and high school programs, Sara Thompson, Ph.D. serves as Director of Leadership Programs and an instructor for two leadership courses. Sara is at the forefront of KLI’s efforts on campus by leading and facilitating core offerings such as the Sophomore Leadership Experience, Team Retreat, Unscripted: Your CMC Narrative, and the Women’s Leadership Workshop. In addition, Sara partners with key groups on campus such as athletics, dean of students, and resident assistants throughout the year to work with students in the contexts that matter to them most, to overcome obstacles, and to develop their leadership potential. In LEAD 10, Dr. Thompson provides students with a solid foundation on how leadership is defined, viewed, and studied by reviewing conceptualizations and theories of leaders and leadership. She also co-teaches Leadership, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley with Professors Riggio and Conger. Most recently, Dr. Thompson co-edited with Rebecca Reichard, “Leader Developmental Readiness: Pursuit of Leadership Excellence” (2016). Sara’s role at KLI allows her to do what she does best, help students build self-confidence and see their leadership potential.

Nancy is currently the Administrative Coordinator and Executive Assistant to Pamela B. Gann, CMC President Emerita, at the Kravis Leadership Institute, Claremont McKenna College. Since 2007, Nancy has managed to oversee administrative responsibilities, major projects and events. Her expertise has expanded to include office management and planning, employee relations and supervision, financial management, board relations, development and the Kravis Prize. Her additional duties include public relations, advertising, promoting, overseeing KLI’s social media and website. The most recent addition to her responsibilities includes supporting Professor Gann as her executive assistant.

Joanne is currently the part-time Administrative Assistant at the Kravis Leadership Institute, Claremont McKenna College. Since March 2012, Joanne has managed the reception area, welcoming faculty, staff, guests and students to the Institute. She provides general information regarding the Institute, and directs specific inquires to other staff members. She assists staff with clerical tasks, and maintains a supply of KLI informational handouts. She also represents KLI at the monthly Safety Coordinators Meetings. Joanne enjoys interacting with the students, answering any questions they may have, and learning about their experiences both here at CMC and during their work and study abroad programs.

Angelica Ferreira ’14 is the Event Logistics Coordinator at the Kravis Leadership Institute. She brings a dynamic perspective to the team with her four year background working as an Institute Assistant when she was as a student. From solidifying event logistics, creating promotional materials, to managing registration, Angelica ensures that events are supported and executed from beginning to end. She currently leads a team of students who assist in preparing for events involving students, KLI Advisory Board, and the community through, publicity, social media, and web content. She has a B.A. in Psychology and Leadership Studies from Claremont McKenna College and Certificate in Meeting and Event Planning from San Diego State University.

Tori Gaines ’13 is the Leadership Programs Coordinator at the Kravis Leadership Institute. Tori provides event support for KLI’s on and off-campus leadership programs such as SLE and Team Retreat. From managing registration, promoting the events, to making sure the on-site logistical needs are met, Tori assists in significant ways to ensure CMC students are receiving high quality leadership development experiences. In addition, Tori works closely with students at KLI to execute these tasks and research leadership development topics and activities to ensure that the suite of programs being offered meets CMC student needs. As a former participant and facilitator for youth leadership programs, Tori is excited to give her time and energy to the Leadership Programs team, and support the students of CMC through KLI. Tori has a B.A. in Theatre and Religious Studies from Claremont McKenna College.
