What’s New in Social Innovation?

Claremont McKenna College was selected in 2014 to be a Hult Prize Campus. Efforts to promote the Hult Prize and its competition were led by Will Su ’16. The Hult Prize is the largest global student competition to solve the world’s toughest challenges. The Hult Prize describes itself as “a start-up accelerator for budding young social entrepreneurs emerging from the world’s universities.” Winners of the Prize receive USD 1 million in seed capital, as well as mentorship and advice from the international business community. Student impACT is organized the case competition on December 6th. 30 CMC teams registered to compete. After many great presentations, the winning team was selected – these students will go on to compete in the Hult Prize Regional competition in San Francisco this March.
Innovative Startup Award
The first round of the 6th annual Innovative Startup Award took place on November 14th, 2014. Twenty student teams pitched their ideas in an effort to win up to $12,500 to implement that idea. Four commercial track teams and three social track teams were selected to advance to the finals in April. Between December and April, ISA finalists will undergo workshops and coaching in a mini-accelerator-style format to prepare them for their final presentations to win up to $12,500. This year, KLI will be opening up the workshops to any student who competed in the ISA.
